Food: The food in Morocco is amazing! There´s lots of meat and wheat though, so if you have special dietary requests, we would need to have a chat before.

Drinks: There´s limited access to alcohol in Morocco as it´s a Muslim country, but we can arrange some red wine occasionally. They have good coffee and the traditional mint tea is nicknamed “Moroccan whiskey” as it´s so strong! It comes with or without sugar. We will be drinking bottled water all along.

Walks: The walks will be around 1,5Hr and require medium stamina only, we won´t be climbing to the top of the mountains.

Culture and Religion: Morocco is a Muslim country with around 60% Berber population. It´s a friendly and quite open minded country, but we need to respect the Muslim culture, which means restrictions in portrait photography, ladies may need to cover their shoulders and hair in certain areas and there´s a limited amount of alcohol available.

Flights: Flights are not included, you need to make your own way to Marrakech and back. We can collect from the airport. There are cheap flights with Easy Jet from £75/return and up, Royal Air Moroc and other airlines from The UK and other countries. The earlier you book, the cheaper the flights will be of course.

SCHEDULE

Please note that the schedule is not set in stone, we just know that we will take the best routes to the best places.

Day 1) THURSDAY

The journey starts at 9am on Thursday 18th January 2018.

The hotel night before is included so you´re ready to start in the morning after breakfast.

Introduction to smartphone photography and Instagram

We start inside the Medina (The Old Town) in Marrakech where we meet in the understated Riad Mayalou, where you´ll get an introduction to smartphone photography and Instagram by Mi.

We´ll already start building up a social media footprint, as the whole group gets tagging and hashtagging, involving the places we visit.

For more advanced photographers, we offer some tasks to complete in the environment, with guide.

Mi is a professional photographer and also renowned for her fantastic Instagram photography. She will go through the most important parts of the smartphone settings and of general photography to get you the best shots. And we´re not necessarily talking about camera settings, it´s just as much about the mind set.

Learn how to see objects on a deeper level, not just focussing on the biggest, most colourful object in the immediate environment.

“For something to catch my attention, it needs to approach me on a deeper level. Without an emotional connection, there´s no photo.” Mi

We will use Mayalou as a location to get some practice!

  • How to spot a shot, composition, exposure and focus
  • Introduction to Instagram; upload, filters, tagging, optimizing your account, consistency and sharing your images.
  • We use the beautiful riad to get some practice

Marrakech Medina Photo Walk

We venture out in the buzzing Medina where we walk as a group on a mission to capture the best angles, light and colours of what we see.

We will focus on a few objects together, such as the rose sacks and the Hanging Rock, where we all capture the same objects as a group. We will later compare and analyse the outcome of the photos to see what worked best and what could be enhanced.

Lunch at a café in the busy Jemaa El Fna Square

Some free time in the Medina (guide optional) to grab a few shots or a bargain of your own.

Jardin Majorelle & Café

We visit the gardens where Yves Saint Laurent used to spend his time. The strong deep blue and yellow colours against the greenery create fantastic patterns and shapes. We work with a couple of the same spots and will compare and analyse the outcome later.

Day 2) FRIDAY

DEPARTURE TO THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS AND THE DADES VALLEY

We travel from Marrakech by Toyota Land Cruisers or small Mercedez Buses up and across the High Atlas mountains. The breathtaking scenery invites to some great landscape photography.

Atlas Mountain walk (Medium strength)

We will leave the cars and go for an hour´s walk in the mountains. The small narrow trails will take us past local Berber villages and houses as well as along the mountain side overlooking the tops on the other side.

Lunch Stop at Tadart

This lunch is not for the faint-hearted! But I can promise you that I´ve never had a better lunch in my life. This is a true experience and the little street stretch with cafés and utility shops offers some great photo opportunities.

Quick stop in Oarzazate

Over night stay at Riad Dar Jnan Tiouira in the Dades Valley

This beautiful riad was created and built by the owner himself and every detail is thought through. It´s a comfortable and beautiful sanctuary for both the body and the soul. We will rest here for two nights, walk, take photos and breath the fresh air. We might even do a little yoga-ish session on the terrace.

Day 3) SATURDAY

Dades Valley walk

We walk a part of the Dades Valley with is peculiar rock formations and lush greenery, olive trees and shrubs. The greenery against the red rocks is great for more landscape photography and details.

Afternoon at Dar Jnan

You get some time for yourself to rest, go through your photos or take a walk in the gardens or neighbourhood.

Photo results and evaluation

Dinner together at Dar Jnan´s restaurant

Day 4) SUNDAY

Aït-Ben-Haddou

Aït-Ben-Haddou is a UNESCO world heritage site and an ighrem (fortified village), along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech.

Located in the foothills on the southern slopes of the High Atlas in the province of Ouarzazate, Aït-Ben-Haddou is a striking example of southern Moroccan architecture.

We need to walk the narrow and uneven paths up the hill to reach the top, overlooking the town and the river.

Aït-Ben-Haddou has been the set for many very famous film and TV productions, such as Game of Thrones, Laurence of Arabia and Gladiator. The soft colours, the ancient houses, the narrow streets and the view are all extremely photogenic.

Return to Marrakech via the Atlas Mountains

Arrival Marrakech around 6pm

We finish back in Marrakech where we drop you off where you need to be on the Sunday evening.

This is the end of the tour – but we don´t leave you for ever!

A Facebook group will be created where Mi will post tutorials, videos and photos both before, during and after the trip. We can post all our photos and share the memories from the trip and see what progress and result we´ve made.

Please note that although we will have wifi in many places, the quality and speed is limited in most places in Morocco and we can´t guarantee it will be satisfying for uploading and communicating all the time.
